| Maria and I spent most of the month of May in Maui in an ocean front townhouse at the edge of Lahaina. The image on the top of this web page was taken on one of the many beautiful evenings as the sun set over the island of Lanai, across from Maui. This being our second stay on Maui, we did some less traditional things (glass fusing class, block printing class) along with a lot of the traditional ones, like driving to Hana. May is the month of the Maui Canoe Festival in which expert canoe carvers from various islands assemble and build traditional canoes and other objects in just a couple weeks. There were teams from Tonga, New Zealand, Marshall Islands, Tahiti, and Hawaii. Click here to see a large and excellent collection of photos taken by our friend and Hawaii host, Tom Brayton. No trip to Maui would be complete without driving to Hana, which requires negotiating some fairly narrow and tightly curved roads. The scenery along the way makes it worthwhile though. We enjoyed a stop at a tourist trap in the form of a lava tube (cave) near Hana. While in Maui, we took a weekend-long class on glass fusing and slumping, which was fascinating. The class was held at the Hui No'eau in Makawao on Maui. We created a couple of plates, some glass tiles and several pendants. This is definitely a hobby we will pursue in the future, particularly given that Portland is something of a "fused glass capital" with Bullseye Glass located downtown. Click here to see some before & after shots (before the kiln and after) of the experiments we made. |
